THE FILM THAT STARTED IT ALL…

november 2020 amber and i were on our mother’s couch retelling the same dumbass story about the day we did not meet one direction in june 2013 on the day of our take me home tour. in the middle of stomping around the living room flailing shouting and physically retracing the steps of that insane day, and getting all riled up for the THOUSANDTH TIME that we were SO CLOSE JUST ONE STEP BEHIND HARRY STYLES THE WHOLE TIME, i said wait. this could be a movie. and we outlined it right there, wine drunk and high on the fangirl energy that simply always arises when the two of us are together. almost two years later, i never imagined that our random fangirl story would speak to so many people in AND out of the 1D fandom. that it would be so universal that people would be telling me their stories of teenage fangirling over every single fandom imaginable. i literally grew up on tumblr, so i obviously know how many people like me are out there. but STILL…

fangirl central was born out of a desire to bring the joy of fandom into my real world community, to at least try to materialize some of the magic i’ve felt simply by belonging to different fandoms my entire life, scrolling on tumblr or going to san diego comic con, and not feeling like the weirdest, most obsessive, unhinged person in the room. and also the magic of learning that being the weirdest, most obsessive, unhinged person in the room is okay and actually really cool and fun. - amanda
