Amanda Layne Miller is a storyteller with a focus on the bizarre, surreal, & magical. A firm believer that fantasy is just an extension of reality, Amanda infuses fantasy and Afrosurrealism into even her most straightforward projects. Her love for all things magically comedic began with works of art such as Bratz Fashion Pixiez, That’s So Raven, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and grew with influences like Sofia Coppola, Tim Burton, Michaela Coel, and Hayao Miyazaki. Her work toes the line between the real and surreal, and features highly absurd satire and/or cringeworthy groundedness, exploring themes like toxic relationships, belonging, sisterhood, home, and cult behavior. Growing up Black and queer in the Bible Belt, within the Church of Christ, attending an all-white all-girls school in Memphis, Tennessee for 13 years—blending the absurd with humor perfectly encapsulates Amanda’s perspective on the psychological effects of groupthink, and how we can supersede learned toxic behaviors in favor of community.
Amanda has developed an animated comedy/sci-fi feature film with Netflix, been a TV Staff Writer for sci-fi show DREAM HUNTERS in Los Angeles & Beijing, Writers’ Assistant on multiple shows, and was featured on Coverfly’s Next List of upcoming writers in the industry in 2023. Most recently, she wrote, directed, and starred in a short film about One Direction with her comedy partner & sister Amber.
Together, Amanda and Amber founded Fangirl Central, a Black queer zillennial media company creating film & events, and helping companies activate audiences & build fandoms. After an Acast-supported podcast, a One Direction drag show, a Twilight game show, and an original musical revue about Black fangirls healing from white Disney Channel content, they now host events in LA with the dedicated purpose of bringing together passionate communities of marginalized and underrepresented fans and artists. Catch them at a cowork, karaoke, screening, or hosting more live shows. Or Comic-Con. Always Comic-Con. Fangirl Central has been featured in Vulture Mag, Polyester Zine, and a Paramount+ original documentary.
Whether working booths at Comic-Cons, being on set of film & TV productions, singing and dancing onstage, or creating her own work, Amanda is an experienced filmmaker, writer, creative director, event producer, and fandom consultant who knows how to meet fans where they are, whatever the medium or space. As both a fangirl and artist, she tackles telling stories from both perspectives in authentic and exciting ways.
